On July 12th, Intel officially released the code for a new generation of Purley server platform, including a new generation of Xeon CPU coded Skylake, and named as Intel Xeon scalable processor, which declared the end of the 4 generation of continuity Xeon E5/E7 naming.

That is, it is no longer be divided as E7 or E5, being replaced with Platinum, Gold, Silver, and Bronze. Skylake is the first generation of new naming methods, and Cascade Lake should be the second generation, sharing the Purley platform.

The first number: 8 ( Platinum ); 6/5 ( Gold ); 4 (Silver); 3 ( Bronze )

The second number: 1 ( the first generation )

The third and fourth number: Specific SKU number

 

Letter suffix:

F stands for Fabric;

T stands for Tcase;

M stands for each CPU slot, supports 1.5TB memory capacity

 

Product Positioning and Configuration

We know that the number of the first number represents behind the Xeon E5 and E7 support CPU, E7 (V4) to support the 4 roads and 8 Road (and above), the E5-2600 supports 2 Road, 4 roads E5-4600 support. The difference is that E7 series CPU 3 QPI (Quick Path Interconnect), E5 series CPU is only 2 QPI, so in the configuration for the four way, the interconnection efficiency of E7 better than the E5-4600 series, but the latter has a price advantage, positioning and differentiation is not obvious. Intel Xeon E5-4600 treat wavering attitude, bring different levels of distress to the server vendors and users.

The Xeon processor can be extended to the interconnection between CPU from the highest 9.6GT/s QPI upgrade for up to 10.4GT/s UPI (Ultra Path Interconnect). With 3 UPI models (platinum and gold 61 Series), it can be configured as 2/4/8 Road, and only 2 UPI models can be configured as 2 and 4.
